Southwestern Minnesota Opportunity Council (SMOC) Head Start is seeking a caring, dependable, and safety-focused Bus Driver to help transport children in our communities to and from Head Start. This position is more than driving a bus — it’s an opportunity to be a trusted part of a child’s day and support school readiness, safety, and family success.

Start date is August 2, 2026.  This position is for 30 - 39 hours per week.

Specific Skills
To carry out the responsibilities, bus drivers will have the skills or training in these areas: Traffic and safety laws, First Aid and CPR, daily maintenance checks, record-keeping, understanding child behavior, constructive discipline and defensive driving skills. Ability to submit accurate and timely data. Flexibility. Good oral communication skills. often working with distractions. Medium work, lifting to 40-60 pounds, with frequent lifting/carrying up to 40-60 pounds. Mobility in and out of bus. Able to sit to drive the duration of all scheduled bus routes. Able to perform maintenance checks to buses.
Responsible For
  • Safely transport Head Start children to and from program sites
  • Conduct daily vehicle safety inspections and maintain transportation records
  • Ensure child safety procedures are followed at all times
  • Build positive relationships with children, families, and staff
  • Support a caring and inclusive environment for all families
  • Assist children as needed during loading and unloading

Educational Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Must possess a Class C driver’s license with passenger endorsement (CDL/P) and vehicle insurance.
  • Prior experience transporting children in a similar setting preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certified or willingness to obtain.

Salary
Starting hourly rate $16.25-$18.82 based on skill, education and experience.
