 In September, the U.S. Census Bureau released poverty, income, and health coverage data for 2023 as well as the American Community Survey (ACS) one-year estimates. The official poverty rate fell by .4 percentage points to 11.1%, with 36.8 million people experiencing poverty, and decreases were seen among various demographic groups except for individuals identifying as multiracial, which saw an increase. The poverty rate using the Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM), which accounts for noncash income, rate rose to 12.9%, with child poverty increasing to 13.7%, while Social Security remained the largest anti-poverty program, lifting 27.6 million people out of poverty.

Southwestern Minnesota Opportunity Council, Inc. (SMOC) is a non-profit Community Action Agency, serving the needs of low-income persons in Southwestern Minnesota, specifically in the counties of Nobles, Rock, Murray, and Pipestone.  Although these counties receive most of our attention, SMOC does provide specific program offerings in as few as one, and in as many as fourteen counties.
